Older than McDonalds

While yawning after reading Kayla a bedtime story….

Kayla: Mama, you have some black stuff on your teeth.

Me: Yes, those are fillings from cavities when I was a little girl.

Kayla: Will I have to get those sometime?

Me: Not if you take good care of your teeth and eat healthy food.

Kayla: Really? If I eat good food, I won’t get cavities?

Me: Really. Eating healthy food makes your teeth nice and strong.

Kayla: Mom, did you not eat healthy food when you were growing up?

Me: No, I didn’t.

Kayla: What did you eat?

Me: Oh…you know…chips, candy, Burger King, McDonalds….

Kayla: They had McDonalds when you were a little girl!!!???

Me: Kayla! Mommy is not THAT old!

Kayla: Did they have McDonalds when Daddy was little?

Me: No, I don’t think so…… 😉

  1. funny!!!

(although I do have to interject that I took meticulous care of my teeth and still ended up with cavities. I think some people are just prone to tooth decay! Although I probably sipped a few more dr. peppers than I should have.)

  2. Thanks for the laugh, I love to read these kind of conversations!

I agree with Megan's comment though. My mom fed us both pretty healthy food growing up (there was no McDonald's in Cairo until 5 years after we moved there!) but I am still prone to cavities. My sister, on the other hand, OFTEN forgot to brush her teeth growing up and a age 23 has not had a single cavity to date. So unfair!

  3. Hi Melanie! I just LOVE your blog! I came across your blog through Robert's! I go to MercyHouse and, just as a reference, I'm the girl who sent Robert the flickr set of baptism photos! 🙂 You are a great writer and are apparently a wonderful mother, teacher, chef and woman of God! Thanks for all that you and Robert pour into the church and the community! Being a part of MercyHouse has been a tremendous blessing to me!
Take care and have a lovely summer!

  4. Thanks, ladies! Megan and Romy, I totally agree that some are more prone to tooth decay – but it was SUCH an opportunity to encourage good habits. 🙂

And, Cory, I'm so glad you found me! Of course, I remember exactly who you are, and I can't wait to check out your blog and photos. Thanks for your sweet comment!
