Bah Humbug

This is just a sampling of what I find in my mailbox each day- catalogues and more catalogues. They’re turning me into a Scrooge. We’ll be striving to avoid this cultural phenomenon of materialism/consumerism with some special Advent activities starting Sunday. I’m excited to focus on the true meaning of the holiday – the coming of Jesus.

For unto us a child is born
Unto us a son is given….
And He shall be called Wonderful, Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

  1. It’s so hard to avoid the consumer frenzy, isn’t it? I’ve been spreading the word about a Web site I’m working on for a charitable organization in Texas called Refuge International. They’re a small group of volunteers who travel to Guatemala and Kenya on medical missions, and they’re doing a huge amount of good – they’re working on eradicating intestinal worms in all the children of Guatemala, among other projects.

Over the past few months, one volunteer has been traveling to Guatemala to meet with local artisans, pay them directly for their products, and then sell the items online, with all the proceeds going directly to Refuge’s programs.

I can really vouch for the good hearts of these folks, and the products are incredibly beautiful and well-made, at reasonable prices. I’d much rather give my money to them than to some big store.

If you’re interested in checking them out, the main Refuge International site is at http://www.refugeinternational.com/ , and the retail site is http://www.handmadeinavillage.com/ .

  2. Thanks, Anne. I enjoyed looking at those sites. The jewelry is pretty, as are the other products! Such a good cause, too. Thanks. (P.S. The website looks great, too!)
